The city of Kotor is town of rich cultural heritage under the
protection of UNESCO. The geographic position and the natural values of the
vicinity make Montenegro and Gulf of Kotor one of the most
attractive resorts on the Adriatic coast. Gulf of Kotor is a winding, fjord
like inlet of the Adriatic coast in Montenegro. It is a good natural
harbour, composed of four Bays linked together. It is deeply cut into
the highest (of) South-East littoral Dinarides Mountains (Orjen 1895m and Lovcen
1749m). It has a convenient position considering the traffic too, as it is situated
on the roads belonging to the so called "East Mediterranean road lines".
The
area of Gulf of Kotor is one of the brightest in the Mediterranean, with the average
temperature of over 18°C, and about 200 sunny days a year.
Besides all these facts, Gulf of Kotor is also very well known as maritime
educational centre. The first maritime school in the
Adriatic coast was founded in Perast in 1512. The
Perast fleet had about 60 ships in that time and all were under command of captains
educated in this school. In 1739 Maritime school was founded in Prcanj
as well. Maritime high school was founded in Kotor in 1849. It is
still active with its three departments: nautical, engineering and shipbuilding.
Maritime college in Kotor was founded in 1959. In the beginning there were only two
departments; nautical and engineering. Today it has few more, such as nautical
economy, electronic techniques. Every year it educates 60 graduated cadets and 60
engine assistants.
As mentioned, Kotor was the headquarters of our merchant fleet "Jugooceanija"
(which was) founded in 1955 and (had) operated in 1991 with 27
vessels from 6000GRT to 60000GRT to transport containers, bulk and general
cargo.
Main export-import port Bar is situated on south of the Montenegrin coast, 100
km from Kotor, an important connection from Adriatic to Central and Eastern Europe.
Bar was also headquarters of Prekookeanska plovidba founded in
1960 which in 1991 operated with 18 vessels, such as general
cargo, bulk carriers and containers.
